Online Resources: Fetal Development

JustTheFacts.Org - There are many internet sites devoted to educating the public about fetal development and pre-natal life, but this is by far the best. ‘Just the Facts’ originated as an educational program for the Irish schools, but has expanded into an educational website for the whole world.

The website itself is very professional looking, easy to navigate, and chock full of interesting information and beautiful pictures. A wonderful resource for educators and students.

3D/4D Ultrasound Pictures - Amazing ultrasound pictures and videos of the unborn child.  (N.B. For readers as confused as I was at first: Very few sites explain what 4-D means, so I will. It's 3D imagery in motion ie over a period of time. The Fourth Dimension is time.)

In The Womb - National Geographic's site for its groundbreaking documentary about life before birth. With clips from the documentary, pictures of life in the womb, and articles about the advances in understanding pre-natal life. (The full DVD can be borrowed from Edmonton Prolife.)

A Chance for Anna - An amazing slideshow with audio about a baby girl diagnosed with spina bifida before she was born, and her parents who chose an experimental pre-birth operation to save her from paralysis.  (Warning, graphics and media intensive. High speed internet recommended.)

Benotafraid.net - An online outreach to parents who have received a poor or difficult prenatal diagnosis.

Human Embryology References - A list of the standard textbooks used to teach human embryology to medical students, compiled by Professor at the University of New South Wales. Most of these are available as reference books at the University of Alberta's John W. Scott Health Sciences Library. (Embryology is the branch of biology that deals with the formation, early growth, and development of living organisms.)
